Overview

For more than 3 decades, the division of Cardio Thoracic and Vascular has been delivering the most innovative and comprehensive care for patients with complex disorders of the heart,lungs and blood vessels. Today, the center is the most advanced cardiovascular care center of its kind in the region - equipped with the latest technologies and tailored around the needs of our cardiovascular patients.

Major Milestones

The Department of Cardiac Surgery along with the Department of Cardiology started functioning with the admission of the first patient on the 29th of February 1976. The first cardiac operation was done on the 26th of October 1976. The patient had a Secundum Atrial Septal Defect, which was closed under Cardiopulmonary Bypass. Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery was started in 1980. M Ch course in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery was started in March 1982 with the admission of two candidates. A separate division for General Thoracic and Vascular Surgery was opened in May 1985. 3 year Mch Vascular surgery course was started in 2008.

Successive Heads of Division

Dr M S Valiathan headed the department for twenty years from the inception of the Institute till May 1994. From June 1994 to April, 2001 Dr M P Mohan Singh headed the department. Dr K S Neelakandhan was the Head of the Department from 2001 to 2005. Prof K.Jayakumar is currently the division Head.

Our Mission

Our team of surgeons,and nurses work closely with other departments of cardiology,anesthetiology and Vascular imaging to provide the safest, state-of-the-art, highest quality, and the most innovative surgery for our patients. It is one of the most prestigious training institutes for cardiothoracic and vascular surgery in the country. The educational mission of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Residency Program is to train surgeons to function as qualified practitioners of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the highest level of performance expected of a certified specialist. This includes providing an optimum number of diverse adult cardiac, congenital cardiac and general thoracic operative experiences under supervision to gain surgical skills. The division is also highly involved in research activities as attested by the numerous publications. The division closely works with BMT wing and our joint venture resulted in development of TTK-Chitra valveTM annd SPICTRATM Membrane oxygenerator.
TTK-CHITRA ValveTM
Though conceived in 1978, being an implant, it went through the most painstaking development for 12 years at our center. TTK Chitra Heart Valves are being used in over 251 major Cardiac Centres in the country. More than 35,000 valves have been implanted since its first implant on December 6, 1990
